Coach for College Forever Changed My Life
Being black in rural Vietnam almost made me feel like a celebrity.
Everywhere I went during the three-week Coach for College program this past summer, people wanted to talk to me and take a picture with me. Many had never seen an American in real life, let alone a black person.

Hello Tar Heels!
My name is Alexis Amato and I am a rising junior on the rowing team. I am majoring in Health Policy and Management.
And my name is Lexi Walters and I am also a rising junior on the rowing team. I am majoring in Exercise and Sport Science and Public Relations.
We recently got back from an amazing experience in Vietnam through the Coach for College program. Coach for College is a program that takes collegiate American athletes across the world to Vietnam. During the month of June, we were stationed at middle school camps in rural Vietnam and worked with other American university students along with Vietnamese university students to teach both academic and athletic lessons to Vietnamese youth! Our efforts were in an attempt to decrease the school drop-out rate and increase the health and physical activity enjoyment of the Vietnamese children.

Summer Blog: Kelly McGrath
Early this summer, I participated in a volunteer-service program called Coach for College. The goal of the organization is to promote higher education through sports and similar competitive initiatives to Vietnamese youth living in rural areas. Along with 7 other student-athletes from across the country, we taught academic classes, life skill classes, and sports to 8th and 9th graders for three weeks. Although none of us knew Vietnamese, we quickly learned that sports can transcend linguistic and cultural barriers and help build confidence and motivate kids in a variety of positive ways.

Student-Athletes Take Service Trip to Vietnam
Trudging through wet fields of green rice paddies; finding an entire fish head in your soup at breakfast; becoming family with children you've never actually exchanged a word with. The typical Boston College study abroad experience doesn't normally include these types of adventures. For BC student-athletes Zoe Lombard (soccer), Nina Baumberger Altirriba (field hockey) and Shannon Healey (rowing), spending three weeks in Vietnam over the summer was anything but typical.

Not Forrest Gump’s Vietnam
Strangely enough, after applying on a whim, I have been fortunate enough to spend the last two summers in Vietnam. One was spent as a coach and another as a director for a session of the camp. My last two summers have not been easy by any definition of the word. Working with children for eight hours a day in a developing country is hard work full of mistranslations, endless questions and constant activity. Imagine walking into a classroom full of seventh graders and being expected to teach a physics or biology lesson, only to realize that none of your students speak English.

Duke University Graduate Parker Goyer Dreams Big, Delivers
Inspired by the likes of Wendy Kopp, the founder and CEO of Teach for America and Greg Mortenson, a one-time mountain climber who has dedicated his life to building schools in remote parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan, Goyer chafed at the lack of opportunities student-athletes had to be of service to others.
Recognizing that there had to be other collegians with similar sentiments, Goyer came up with a bold plan, one that would allow student-athletes to utilize their skills and talents to help serve young people in countries less-developed than her own.
